The next morning, Matt makes Patricia a breakfast
of scrambled eggs. He tells her that she's got a busy
day ahead of her. Matt gives her a newspaper and tells her he's circled some
jobs he thinks she should
apply for. Patricia tells him it isn't the sort of conversation she was expecting.
Matt asks her if she was
expecting a deep and meaningful "Where do we stand?" kind of chat,
and Patricia says yes. Matt tells
her maybe later.
Gordon and Barbara are having breakfast at Dural. Barbara asks her husband
to phone up and tell the
golf club that she won't be playing - she doesn't feel like it. Gordon tells
her that she shouldn't bottle
her problems up, and that maybe she should have a talk with Matt. Barbara
tells him she'll think about it.
Gordon goes out into the hall where he meets Amanda coming down the stairs.
She asks how Barbara is,
and Gordon tells her she is worse. Amanda tells him that maybe it would be
better if she got out from
under Barbara's feet for a while. She says that she could go down to Melbourne
to see a friend who's
just got back from St. Moritz. Amanda tells Gordon she'll catch a plane that
afternoon.
In the living room, Barbara calls Matt and tells him that Gordon thinks she
should see him. Matt tells her
she should drop round about four thirty, after he's back from the office.
After Matt hangs up, Patricia
asks him if it's the Barbara she knows and loves. Matt tells her it is, but
tells her to stop fishing.

Later, Barbara arrives at Matt's flat. He tells
her to sit down, but she says she's fine. Matt asks her
what is wrong. Barbara asks Matt for a drink and he obliges. Barbara asks
Matt what you do when you
find out the man you've loved all your life has lied to you for years.
Amanda leaves the airport in Melbourne and is surprised to see Wayne there
to meet her. Wayne tells her
he's surprised she's plucked up the courage so quickly to tell everyone she's
living with him again.
Amanda tells him that she hasn't told anyone - she made up an excuse. Wayne
tells her that he wants
everything to be as pleasant for her as it is for him.
At Dural, Gordon receives a phone call from Andy, who is in a club. He asks
to speak to Amanda, and Gordon
tells him she has gone to Melbourne to see a friend. Andy tells him that Amanda
is making a big mistake.
He explains that he can't talk about it on the phone, so Gordon tells him
to pop around that afternoon, as
Barbara will be out for a few hours.
At Matt's flat, Barbara explains that she had a cold upbringing with Dee,
which lasted for twenty years.
She tells him when Roland came along, he wasn't only her lover, he was her
friend. Barbara starts getting
tearful, and tells Matt that she thought Roland was honest and trustworthy,
but now she doesn't know how
she feels. Barbara starts sobbing.
At Dural, Andy tells Gordon that Amanda has gone back to Wayne. He explains
that she's got an idea
about getting back at Wayne for all the things he's done, and that she wouldn't
listen to him. Gordon tells
Andy he'll see what he can do, and that he did the right thing telling him.

At Toorak, Wayne and Amanda are going upstairs
when the phone rings. Wayne takes the case upstairs
and Amanda goes down to answer the phone. It is Gordon, who tells her he knows
she is back living with
Wayne. Amanda asks to speak to Andy and Gordon tells her that he was only
doing what he thought was
best. Gordon tells her he wants her back in Sydney straight away, but Amanda
says no. Gordon tells her
she is being childish, but she tells him that someone has to make people see
how low Wayne really is.
She hears a noise upstairs and suddenly changes the subject, and Gordon realises
that Wayne must be
there. He tells Amanda to ring him back as soon as possible, or he'll let
Wayne know what she's up to.
She agrees and hangs up. Wayne comes down the stairs and she tells him it
was someone for Kevin.
At his flat, Matt is looking at Barbara's file. He tells her that she didn't
need professional help - just
someone outside the family to listen to her. Barbara thanks him and is just
leaving when Patricia comes
in. Matt tells Barbara he'll walk her to her car and they leave. Patricia
spots Barbara's file sitting on
the television and looks curious.
Later, Matt returns and tells Patricia he's been for a walk. He picks up Barbara's
file and Patricia tells
him the name on the cover should be Hamilton, not Armstrong. Matt looks at
her and Patricia assures him
she didn't read it. Matt tells her that he believes her, and Patricia tells
him she is serious about changing her ways.

Patricia tells Matt that she has some good news
- she got the job she was after. She thanks him for
pushing her into it. Patricia says that she will be starting in a few days,
and realises that some of her
friends are going to be looking down their noses at her being a receptionist.
She adds that it isn't a
comedown but a new start. Matt asks her if she could stand one deep and meaningful
conversation that
would only take three words. He tells Patricia that he loves her. Patricia
is speechless.
At Dural, Gordon can't believe how much happier Barbara is. She explains that
seeing Matt made all the
difference. Barbara tells Gordon that she thinks she can finally face Helen
and Andy - in fact she was
thinking of inviting them for dinner the following week. Gordon tells her
he'll look forward to it.
At the flat, Patricia tells Matt that's the worst thing he could have said.
She adds that, for the first time
in ages, she feels like she is Patricia Dunne - not Hamilton or Morrell. Patricia
explains that she wants to
be free of men for a while, she wants to be independent. She tells Matt that
she hopes he understands,
because the last thing she wants to do is hurt him. Matt looks disappointed.
At Dural, Barbara goes to stack the dishwasher and the phone rings. Gordon
answers it and it is Amanda.
She tells him she is old enough to know what she is doing, and she's made
up her mind. Unknown to her,
Wayne is standing at the top of the stairs in his pyjamas. Gordon tells her
that he should tell Wayne, but
she tells him she knows he won't. Amanda tells Gordon that, if she does find
Beryl's Power Of Attorney,
he'll be smiling as much as she is. At the top of the stairs, Wayne hears
everything.....
