Later, Gordon, Barbara and Amanda are eating dinner.
Barbara is flying to Melbourne that evening and
tells Gordon she's going to make sure that Wayne gets a retraction printed
in the newspaper. Amanda is
angry and tells them that they can't blame Wayne for exaggerating, not after
what Gordon had just
done to him. She tells Barbara that she wasn't visiting a friend in Melbourne
- she went down there to
get something on Wayne. She adds that she saw Wayne's reaction when he read
the letters and he
wasn't faking it. She tells them they've only got themselves to blame and,
if she feels sorry for anyone,
it's Wayne. She storms out. Barbara asks Gordon what that was all about, but
he says nothing.
Later on, Amanda comes through the front door and Barbara calls her into the
living room. She tells
Amanda that she isn't going to make a fuss about her visit down to Melbourne
as she is adult - some of
the time. Amanda tells Barbara that she knows she hated Wayne, and she wouldn't
have changed if there
wasn't a good reason. She adds that Wayne wasn't conning her - he was for
real. Barbara tells her
she's still going down there. Amanda replies that, once she's seen him herself,
she won't be hard on him.

From Toorak, Wayne phones Beryl and tells her he
needs to see her. Beryl tells him she is too busy to
go there, so Wayne says he'll visit her. Later, Wayne is at the Palmer house.
He tells Beryl that he tried
to con her, and arranged that Kevin would be out of the way. Beryl wonders
why he is telling her. Wayne
explains that something happened that made him realise what a creep he was.
He adds that he isn't
interested in the business anymore, and what she does with her money is up
to her. Wayne goes to leave,
telling Beryl that he burnt the Power Of Attorney and that Kevin's job is
for real. After leaving, Wayne
passes a newspaper stand in the street and buys one. On the front is a headline
about Helen's death and
he looks at it in horror as he walks along the street. Then Wayne goes into
a bar.
Later, Wayne gets out of a taxi at Toorak and lets himself into the house.
He drops his newspaper and
bends down to pick it up. When he looks up, Barbara and Andy are standing
there. Wayne guesses they're
there about the newspaper story. He tells Barbara he is sorry. Barbara replies
not half as sorry as he's
going to be when she's finished with him.
At Dural, Amanda is lounging on the sofa. She tells Gordon she hopes Barbara
isn't too rough on Wayne.
She adds that she feels sorry for Wayne. Gordon tells her to make sure she
keeps it to just feeling sorry.

At Toorak, Barbara is laying into Wayne. She tells
him she wants a full retraction from the newspaper.
Wayne asks how he's supposed to get that, and Barbara tells him that's his
problem. Wayne tells her it's
too late and Barbara slaps him around the face. Wayne tells her he'll call
the newspaper. Barbara storms
out, giving Wayne a bottle and telling him he'll probably need it. Wayne tells
Andy he didn't think. Andy
tells him it's not much of an excuse, and follows Barbara outside. Wayne has
a drink and moans that he
didn't want to hurt anyone. He goes after the other two.
Barbara and Andy get in their car. Barbara explains that she couldn't wait
to get out of there - Wayne
makes her skin crawl. They are about to drive off when Wayne appears at the
front door, shouting that
he's got to talk to them. Barbara starts to drive off, and Wayne jumps in
front of the car. Barbara hits
Wayne - he goes up onto the bonnet and falls to the floor. Horrified, Barbara
and Andy get out and
kneel down next to him. Barbara touches the back of Wayne's head and is shocked
to find blood on
her hand.....
