Todd
is working at the boatyard when Amanda turns up. Todd says hello and asks
what she's doing there.
Amanda says she thought she'd come to say hello. Todd asks her if she and
Andy enjoyed the show. Amanda
says it was good, and asks what he and his friend did. Todd says they went
to dinner and it was very nice.
He tells Amanda he should be working. One of his co-workers says he can take
a break, but Todd says it's
all right. Amanda tells Todd she can't see him getting the sack for taking
a few minutes off, but Todd tells
her he should be working. Amanda shouts that she only came to ask him out
that night, but there obviously
isn't much point. Todd says he's sorry. Amanda looks at him and walks off.
A short time later, Amanda walks down the road to the boarding house and sees
Irene doing some work in
the garden. Irene sees her and they sit on the lawn, with Irene telling Amanda
she seems a bit down.
Amanda says it's Todd. Irene asks what the problem is. Amanda says she thought
everything was going well
for them, but now Todd's backing off. She tells Irene he said something about
an old flame being back in
town, but he could at least tell her straight out so she'd know. She adds
that everything was fine before
the previous night, and she feels like a fool because she virtually told him
she loved him. Irene tells her
that sometimes men get a bit scared when things start getting serious, and
need time to adjust. Amanda
starts getting upset and says that Todd obviously doesn't feel the way about
her that she feels about him,
and there's not a damn thing she can do about it. Irene gives her a hug.

At
the apartment, Amanda is lying on the couch, listening to music. When it finishes,
she gets up to take the
record off and notices some pictures on the shelf. She starts looking at them
- they are of her and Todd
larking about with Irene. There is a knock on the door and she answers it
- it's Todd. Amanda says she
didn't expect to see him. Todd follows her in, and asks if she wants to go
down to the beach and do a bit
of wind- surfing. Amanda asks what happened to his old flame. Todd says there
wasn't one - it was
something he made up. Amanda says it was another one of his jokes. Todd says
it wasn't a joke, and there's
something he wants to talk about. Amanda tells him she already knows they're
finished. Todd tells her he
hasn't got very much longer to live - he's dying. Amanda says oh yes - just
like he was going to sail his
windsurfer into a hydrofoil. She shouts that she doesn't know why he thinks
these awful jokes are funny.
Todd says he's telling her the truth. Amanda shouts that she doesn't want
to know. She tells him to go -
she doesn't want to see him again. Todd stands there, but Amanda has turned
her back on him. Todd starts
to leave and looks back. Amanda looks at him, and Todd looks hurt. He leaves,
and Amanda looks
unsure of herself.....
